My mother said I must always be intolerant of ignorance but understanding of illiteracy. That some people, unable to go to school, were more educated and more intelligent than college professors.

Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou was one of my idols. Her words spoke so much truth and wisdom. In this quote, I am reminded of my maternal grandmother. She was the smartest person I knew. She wasn't academically educated, but her intelligence far surpassed most people I have met. Through my grandmother, I learned not to judge others and listen to all. This is an important lesson for all teachers to know and practice. Listen to our kids and learn from them...they can teach us so much about the world if we just listen. RIP Grandmama. RIP Maya Angelou.
